Silica is an essential requirement of the body, and has been known to help strengthen fingernails, hair and keep our skin looking radiant and healthy. If you are concerned about the health and appearance of your hair, skin and nails, this may be the supplement for you!

What is Silica?

Silica is a trace mineral, which means the body only needs a very small amount of it to stay healthy.  However this small amount is essential for many parts of our body such as our bones, teeth, skin, tendons, blood vessels, nails and hair. It is involved in the formation of healthy bone tissue and collagen, the framework which makes the body "stick" together, without which, the body would fall apart!

Additionally, silica has been found to help counteract the effects of excessive aluminium in the body, which is implicated in the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Benefits of Silica

Silica may benefit the body in many ways, such as:

  • Slows down the aging process by enhancing the collagen process
  • Relieves back pain
  • Hardens tooth enamel and strengthens gums
  • Strengthens hair (stops hair breakage) and nails
  • Improves elasticity of joints
  • Assists in the prevention of kidney stones
  • May assist in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease by inhibiting the body from absorbing aluminium
  • Fewer problems with cardiovascular disease
  • Stimulates the metabolism
  • Stimulates cell formation
  • Repairs and maintains vital lung tissue
  • Can aid in the treatment of vaginal cysts
  • May help regulate high blood pressure

Why do we need Silica?

Silica can be obtained from certain foods. However for many of us it can be difficult to obtain adequate levels of this essential mineral from our diet alone.  Our metabolism, eating habits and age can all affect the amount of silica which is absorbed in our body.

As we get older, we are not able to replace or absorb silica as easily as we once could. Thus, taking a silica supplement can help ‘supplement’ our diet intake and help to strengthen our hair, skin and nails.

Where is Silica found?

Silica can be found in certain foods, the ones that contain the most are:

  • Cereals, in particular oats and rice.
  • Cucumbers
  • Asparagus
  • Lettuce
  • Cabbage
  • Onions
  • Potatoes
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Strawberries
  • Avocados
